Is it better to leave it open to player creativity or give them solid examples that may be the only ones used?

I think you should leave it open to the players to come up with their talent. It will help the players better understand the game.

What I did for Point of Collapse, and everyone seemed to like, is I provided a few detailed settings and realities of the world.

What this did was provide snapshots that vividly show players what kind of world they are in - without robbing them out any creative juice.

Anyways, that's what is working for me.
